TIRUPATI: Minister for Forests and Environment S. Vijayarama Raju on Friday claimed that smuggling of forest goods especially red sanders was on the decline. Talking the mediapersons, he said armed mobile parties have been pressed into service to effectively tackle smuggling and pointed out that as part of the drive, 476 tonnes of red sanders worth about Rs. 2.09 crores along with 199 lorries were seized in the fiscal 2006-07. As many as 386 cases were registered and 290 persons wanted in connection with the smuggling of red sanders were arrested during the year. The Minister said steps were underway to fill vacant posts and provide more vehicles to patrol teams. Number of check-posts and watchtowers were also being increased for effective surveillance, Mr. Raju said.
Solar fencing
The Minister took some time off from his busy schedule to visit the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park. He said plans were being worked out to provide solar fencing around the park for effective surveillance. Tirupati MLA M. Venkatramana and senior officials were also present.
