TIRUCHI: The Allahabad-based Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) will energise 3,500 to 4,000 route kilometres across the country during the 11th Five Year Plan, its General Manager R. Mohandoss said here on Thursday. For the current fiscal, the Railway Board had given CORE a target of energising 500 route km all over the country, he told reporters. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, a wholly owned Government company, would take up electrification work on another 200 route km. In all, 700 route km would be electrified during the current year. Mr. Mohadoss said current year's target was higher compared to the last fiscal (2006-07), when CORE completed electrification works on 360 route km. The Railway Ministry had sanctioned Rs. 317 crore to energise 500 route km this year. Mr. Mohandoss said CORE would take up electrification works on sections, including Villupuram - Tiruchi, Karepalli - Bhadrachalam, Lingampally - Wadi, Bangalore Area and from Cuttack to Paradip. The General Manager, who earlier inspected electrification work being carried out between Vriddhachalam and Tiruchi, said 17,811 route km had been electrified. With regard to the works in the Villupuram - Tiruchi section, he said the electrification between Villupuram and Vriddhachalam would be completed by September and up to Ariyalur in January. The works up to Tiruchi were targeted for completion by April next year. As part of the project, sub-stations would be set up at Vriddhachalam, Ariyalur and Tiruchi. Electrification works on the Tiruchi - Madurai section (154 route km ) at a cost of Rs. 86.33 crore would begin this year. The Railway Board had sanctioned electrification work on the Thiruvananthapuram - Kanyakumari section (87 route km ) at a cost of Rs. 54 crore besides on the Thrissur - Guruvayur section covering a distance of 22 km.
