Court directive on missing youth

Staff Reporter

The youth from Phulta village has been missing since May 12

BERHAMPUR: The High Court has directed the Ganjam district administration, the police and the State government to furnish the data regarding the whereabouts of a missing youth Maheswar Sasmal.

Maheswar from Phulta village has been missing since May 12 following a lethal attack on him at the village. According Pitabas Panda, the lawyer of missing Maheswar, the High Court on Thursday served notices to State home secretary, Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP) and Ganjam Collector to furnish information regarding the missing youth by the next hearing of the case in July.

Apart from it the court also directed the police to provide the necessary security to the family of Maheswar at Phulta village. Mr. Panda said Maheswar's brother Bulu sasmal had filed a habeas corpus demanding to know the whereabouts of his brother and a miscellaneous case urging security for his family.

Phulta is a violence prone village of Ganjam district with regular occurrence of group clashes.

On May 12 some supporters of Phulta Shanti Committee made a lethal attack on Maheswar.

He went missing after the attack. There were allegations and rumours that he had been killed and his body burnt up.

Bulu preferred to approach the High Court last month as the police could not provide any information about his missing brother.

On May 14, the police had only recovered the motorcycle of Maya from a tank near the village.

According to Maheswar's lawyer, Pitabas Panda, the police are yet to make proper investigation to find out what happened to his client.

Mr. Panda also added that the villagers of Phulta ostracized Maheswar's family.

It is alleged that the family is not being allowed to meet any one from outside and are living in panic.
