Thiruvananthapuram
Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: Residents of the Perunthanni ward in the city are on the warpath against the move to construct a high-rise apartment complex in the locality. The Thiruvananthapuram Citizens Protection Forum is spearheading an agitation against the construction firm that has secured a building permit from the City Corporation for the project. Residents say the apartment complex would overload the utility lines and other civic amenities, making life difficult for the neighbourhood. The eight-storeyed building is slated to come up on 40 cents of land on T.R. Sukumaran Nair Road, leading to Chempakassery junction from Perunthanni. Forum president M. Krishnan Nair said the corporation had violated rules in sanctioning a high-rise apartment in the area falling under the Fort heritage zone. He alleged that the Government was turning a blind eye to the proliferation of multi-storeyed buildings in the city. He said the forum would launch an agitation against the flat lobby. An action council comprising residents of the Chempakassery area has been constituted to oppose the project. The council is organising a dharna on T.R. Sukumaran Nair Road to register popular protest. Yamuna Constructions director Jayachandran said the firm had secured the necessary clearance from the authorities. He said the opposition to the project was triggered by vested interests. Corporation secretary Johnson K. George maintained that there was no violation of norms in issuing building permit for the apartment complex.
