NEW DELHI: Students from Mizoram aspiring to get a seat in Delhi University this year are willing to test new waters. They are showing a keen interest in different vocational subjects offered by the University and the much-in-demand Journalism programme.

"This year students have shown an inclination towards vocational subjects. There have been a lot of queries on Journalism and Mass Media Studies as well because they are very much in vogue. We tell them that they are required to fill separate forms for these programmes," says B. Lalzarliana, president of Delhi Mizo Zirlai Pawl, which has put up a "help desk" on the North Campus and South Campus of the University to assist students in the admission process. "They want to know what they can do in the field of computer science and the hospitality industry. We tell them about the options available in Delhi University as well as other institutes and universities offering these programmes," said Lalzarliana, who is pursuing his M. Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University and is one of the counsellors at the "help desk".

Apart from these, Mizo students have some general queries, like how to fill the admission form, which colleges to opt for and what courses to choose.

"They do not have a very clear idea about which colleges are good and reputed. So we counsel them and give them information about the cut-off lists of different colleges. At times they need help in filling the admission forms also. We want them to be realistic and tell them that they must choose the colleges according to their percentage," said Rebecca Ralte, another counsellor.

Accommodation

A decent facility for accommodation in the Capital is one of the biggest worries of the outstation students and those from Mizoram are no exception. "Most of these students who have come to fill up the forms are presently put up at Mizoram House or with their friends and acquaintances in Munirka and the North Campus. We guide them about the paying guest facilities across the campus and the likely prices," added Lalzarliana.
