NEW DELHI: Delhi University's St. Stephen's College is planning to reserve 20 per cent of its seats for students from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes categories from this academic year. The proposal is at a "purely tentative" stage and it is only when the all-powerful Supreme Council -- the highest decision-making body of the college -- meets this coming Tuesday that a formal announcement will be made, said officiating Principal Valson Thampu on Friday.
Pending Council approval
If the Council approves the proposal, St. Stephen's will offer 40 per cent seats for general category students, another 40 per cent for Christian students, and the rest for SC/ ST students. "By creating this window of opportunity, I am trying to reaffirm the true character of St. Stephen's. There have been three factors in this whole issue. First, the reality of St. Stephen's as a minority institution. Second, the fact that Christian culture has a definite commitment to social justice, and third, that we are deeply committed to excellence. Though we have reserved seats, we will go by pure merit among all groups and no recommendation will be entertained," asserted Mr. Thampu. On providing quota for students from Other Backward Classes, he said: "For the time being I'm not thinking about it. But I do not rule out the possibility."
