Man crushed to death by elephant

Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN: A man was crushed to death by an elephant in Laldhang forest of Hardwar district over the weekend, taking to four the toll of persons killed by tuskers in this region in the past few days.

Although forest officials here have described the killings as "unfortunate", nothing has been done to protect the human population living on the periphery of the Rajaji National Park. Neither has any effort been initiated for restoration of the elephant habitat that has been badly affected by development projects or illegal settlements over the past few decades.

"It is time the Government established the elephant corridors mooted by the wildlife experts in the early 1990s and post only wildlife-friendly officials in the wildlife wing," suggested A. N. Tiwari, a local environmentalist.
