CHENNAI: "Those who have grown faster should help those who have been left behind, or I'm afraid there will be deep divisions in society," Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said here on Saturday. Every process will have early winners. Those who have grown faster should pause, look behind, and see if they can help 10 others come forward, he said, addressing a function organised by the Rajasthan Cosmo Club Foundation and the RCC Platinum Trust for distributing 11,000 uniform sets to underprivileged children. The Foundation runs a cloth bank, where used and new clothes collected from people are washed, mended, segregated according to size and packed for distribution. Saturday's function marked the completion of distribution of 65,000 uniform sets. Students of Corporation and panchayat schools received them.
Effort lauded
Commending the organisation's effort, Mr. Chidambaram said: "Uniforms give an identity to students and inculcate a sense of discipline." He complimented the Rajasthani community in Chennai, who came here three or four generations ago, for sharing the wealth they made from their businesses. Polaris Software Lab chairman and CEO Arun Jain said children played an important role in changing the environment. "With confidence, commitment and creativity, you can make a difference," he told the students. RCC president Ramesh Dugar said 220 schools across Tamil Nadu benefited from the free uniform scheme. Care had been taken to make the uniforms in appropriate sizes to fit students.
