Women corner 3 mayor's posts

K. Balchand

PATNA: Women came up trumps in cornering as many as three posts of mayor in the elections that were held for five municipal corporations in Bihar on Saturday.

Elections for the post of mayor for the five municipal corporations of Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Gaya, Ara and Muzaffarpur were held on Saturday, while that for the Patna Municipal Corporation is scheduled to be held on a later date.

Vimla Devi, Bina Yadav and Lalita Devi were elected mayors of Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur and Gaya municipal corporations respectively.

Elections to these local bodies were held on a non-party basis. As at the lower levels the top posts of mayor and deputy mayor were reserved despite being single unit posts.

Elections were also conducted to elect heads of as many as 40 municipalities. Elections to these top posts were marred by a series of kidnappings of newly elected councillors.
