Minister visits observation home, presents play materials

Coimbatore: Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna along with Collector Neeraj Mittal on Saturday visited the observation home in the city and gave away play materials and sports gadgets to children in the home.

The Minister gave a patient hearing to the children (32 boys and two girls) on the circumstances that landed them in the home.

Ms. Aruna asked them about the facilities there and wanted to know whether they require anything.

Change mindset

She told the children to change their mindset and reform themselves so that they could go out of the home and live their precious childhood. She presented materials such as ball and carrom board to the children.

The Minister asked the Collector to send back home the children who had landed there after running away from their homes.

Activities

Earlier, the Minister reviewed the performance of the department in the district and asked the officials to ensure that the benefits reached the beneficiaries without any hitch.

The activities of the social welfare department were aimed at giving a personal touch to the lives of the poor and the needy, she said.

Tricycles

She also commended the district administration for providing 150 gas stoves to the anganwadis across the district and said steps would be taken to provide tricycles to these anganwadis.

Mr. Mittal said efforts were on to modernise 50 noon meal centre kitchens in the Coimbatore Corporation area.

He said 2.21 lakh children under the noon meal scheme with 4,135 noon meal centres were being given 4.43 lakh eggs a week at the rate of two eggs for a child a week.

The Minister gave away marriage assistance of Rs. 9 lakh to 62 women, gadgets to overcome physical disability to eight persons and cheques to the best anganwadi worker and to the heir of an anganwadi worker who died while on duty.
