E.U. comment irks Islamabad

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reacted angrily on Saturday at European Union concern over Government curbs on media, describing it as a leftover of colonialism.

"We do not need an outside judge to come and deliver statements, lectures and sermons to us. We have passed that age. We no more are living in the age of the white man's burden," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said, reacting to a statement by E.U. ambassadors expressing concern at a new ordinance aimed at regulating television broadcasts.

In a statement on June 7, the ambassadors expressed concern over "recent setbacks with regard to media freedom," particularly the blocked transmissions of licensed TV stations and the intimidation of journalists.
