BJP slams move to evacuate Tamils from Colombo
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday condemned the Sri Lankan Government's move to evacuate Tamils from Colombo.
Terming the move "human rights violation," BJP national vice-president S. Thirunavukkarasar said India should join other countries in condemning the "evacuation."
The party, he said, also opposed sale of any type of arms to Sri Lanka as these would be used against Tamils.
Talking to newsmen here, the BJP leader urged the State Government to take steps to release water from the Mettur Reservoir for kuruvai cultivation.
Mr. Thirunavukkarasar charged that wrong policies being pursued by the Centre had increased the divide between the rich and the poor.
The Centre's claim of 9 per cent growth rate did not reflect the true state of affairs. The growth was confined to information and service sectors. Agriculture continued to be neglected with a growth rate of just 2 per cent.
