Karunanidhi gives cash awards to seven students

Government will also bear entire expense of their higher education

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday handed over cash awards to seven students who had scored high marks in the Standard X examination held in March.

The awards were given to them under a scheme introduced by the then Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government in 1996 to assist students who had taken Tamil as a subject and held the first three ranks in Standard X examination at the district and State levels.

An official release here said the Government would also bear the entire expense of the higher education of these students.

Among the students who received the awards from Chief Minister was S. Akshaya of St.Mary's Girls Higher Secondary School in Chengalpattu in Kancheepuram district. Ms. Akshaya, who came first by scoring 490 marks out of 500, was given a cash prize of Rs.7500.

S. Jassima Sulaiha of Amali Girls Higher Secondary School at Cheranmadevi in Tirunelveli district and Sivakamasundari of Government Girls High School at Peralam in Tiruvarur district who came second in the State by scoring 489 marks received Rs.6000 each from the Chief Minister.

Four students who scored 488 marks and occupied the third position received Rs.5000 each from the Chief Minister. They were R. Lamshi of Amala Convent Girls Higher Secondary School at Thuckalay in Kanyakumari district, A. Bala Vidya of SPIC Nagar Higher Secondary School in Tuticorin district, J. Arthi of Diwan Bahadur T. Rangacharyar National Higher Secondary School and E. Karthikeyan of St. Joseph's Higher Secondary School at Manjakuppam in Cuddalore district.

Mr. Karunanidhi also handed over certificates to the awardees declaring that the Government would bear the entire cost of their higher education.

The students, who received the cash prize, and their parents, thanked the Chief Minister for implementing the scheme.

Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu, Secretary of the Department M. Kutralingam and Director of School Education R. Kannan were present.
