Trains detained as lorry gets stuck

TIRUCHI: Five trains suffered detention at various stations after a container lorry got stuck on a level crossing near Tiruchi Town railway station here on Saturday.

Railway sources said the lorry was passing through the manned level crossing when its wheels got stuck on the track, causing obstruction to train movements for over an hour. Consequently, the Chennai-bound Pallavan Super Fast Express was detained at Tiruchi Town station for nearly 90 minutes. The Madurai-Villupuram passenger suffered detention at Ponmalai station for 70 minutes, while the Chennai-Nagercoil special train was detained at Srirangam for over 100 minutes.

The Kurla-Madurai Express and the Villupuram-Tiruchi passenger were the other trains which suffered detentions at Valadi and Lalgudi for nearly 45 minutes. A crane was pressed into service to pull out the lorry from the track. — Staff Reporter

3 pedestrians

killed in accident

VILLUPURAM: Three pedestrians were crushed to death after a tractor-trailer laden with sugarcane fell on them at Vadaponparappi in Sankarapuram block near here on Saturday. The accident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The dead were identified as Jabamalai, her daughter Hanif (7) and Justin (6). The driver ran away from the scene. — Special Correspondent

Gelatine sticks recovered

PUDUKOTTAI: A gunny bag containing fifteen gelatine sticks and wires was found on a field near a Government girls' higher secondary school at Gandarvakottai on Friday. Some agricultural labourers who sighted the bag alerted the police. The police personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the bag. The Gandarvakottai police have registered a case under the Explosives Act. — Staff Reporter

PDS rice seized

CHENNAI: Officials of the Civil Supplies CID on Friday seized 104 tonnes of rice meant for the public distribution system (PDS) from a mill and another place in Thanjavur district.

Acting on information that PDS rice had been hoarded for smuggling to other States, officials raided a rice mill on Aranthangi Road, Pattukottai, and seized 1725 bags of PDS rice weighing 86.575 tonnes. At another place on Pannaivayal Road, Pattukottai, 550 bags of ration rice weighing 17.425 tonnes were seized.

The value of the rice seized was Rs.12.48 lakh.

Efforts were on to arrest three persons who were indulging in hoarding/smuggling rice, the police said.

The modus operandi of smugglers was to purchase ration rice at a lower price, hoard and smuggle it to other States for use as "chickenfeed" in poultry farms. — Special Correspondent
