NELLORE: In a significant development, the Bharatiya Janata Party has announced that it will not field its candidate for the Presidential election. Besides, the party has declared that it is in favour of a consensus candidate for the countries top post. "It will always be better for all political parties to create a consensus on who would be the next President of the country," BJP senior leader M. Venkaiah Naidu said. Asked whether it is a strategy to win support of parties that have been opposing the BJP for Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekawat for presidency, the party senior leader claimed that the Vice-President was not at all a BJP candidate. "Mr. Shekhawat has not been associated with the BJP in any manner after he became the Vice-President of India," Mr. Naidu, who was here to attend a function at Swarna Bharat Trust, told reporters on Friday. He, however, said that no party was in a position to field its candidate for the top post given the numerical disadvantage.
Political parties
Therefore, The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has authorised former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to elect the presidential candidate. Accordingly, he has been in touch with various political parties.
