Rythu sadassu: Minister makes `promises'

Proposes `Pavala vaddi' scheme for farmers Galeru-Nagari irrigation project to solve problems of the farmers in semi-arid parts

TIRUPATI: Ministers R. Chenga Reddy and G. Arunakumari, at the `Rythu sadassu' here on Saturday, promised to take all problems of farmers to the notice of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Addressing farmers, Mr. Chenga Reddy, Minister for Law and Technical Education said that the Government was seriously contemplating to extend `Pavala vaddi' scheme, currently restricted to the DWCRA and woman SHGs, to the farmers as well.

The Chief Minister was seized of the matter and he had already initiated discussions in this regard with the chiefs of nationalised banks, the Minister said.

He said tenders were finalised for the much-awaited Galeru-Nagari irrigation project and said that it would solve the problems of farmers of these semi-arid parts as it would irrigate additionally 1.2 lakh acres when ready after two years.

Tenders had been finalised for the Rs. 150-crore to Balaji Reservoir scheme and Rs.241-crore Padmasagar as part of the `Jalayagnam'.

G. Arunakumari, Minister for Medical Education and Health Insurance said that she had taken appointment with the Chief Minister on June 13 when she would apprise him of the woes of the Chittoor farmers and seek immediate redress.

Losses

She said cane growers of Chittoor had incurred huge losses this season because of the low installed capacities of the two Government sector sugar factories.

Steps would be taken to disburse within 20 days payment due to the farmers for the cane stocks they had supplied to the two co-op sugar factories.
