Belgaum: Keeping an eye on the growing potential for commercial rabbit farming in the country, a city-based organisation has already started preparing ground and expanding its network to tap the market that is expected to grow to a large extent in about a decade. The All India Rabbit Farming Association Private Limited (AIRFA) has taken up rabbit farming on a commercial basis and is presently looking forward to attract farmers and individuals to take up rabbit farming, both as principal and secondary venture, as it is economically viable and has promise of good returns. According to release here on Saturday, the total expenditure that will be incurred on raising one unit comprising 10 parent rabbits and the working capital will be about Rs. 27,000. The total expenditure on the unit for a period of five years will be Rs. 18,846. The returns by way of sale of meat and parent rabbits will be about Rs. 2.50 lakh in five years. The AIRFA, which is mainly into trading for commission, has come forward to help set up rabbit units with recognised breeds for commercial farming.
