orders probe

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran on Friday asked the chairman of the Guruvayur Devaswom to look into the complaint of compulsory collection of funds from the parents of students seeking admission to the English-medium school run by the Guruvayur Devaswom Educational Society using the receipt of the temple and take action. According to a complaint by Suresh, executive member of the parent-teacher committee of the school, the Principal in-charge was collecting Rs.5,700 from the parents. The school's receipt was being given for a sum of Rs.1,700 and the temple's receipt for Rs.4,000. The Minister also asked those concerned to submit details of such collections made from 2000 to 2007, the amount involved, how it was utilised and whether it was shown in the temple's revenue.

Welfare fund

for workers

KOCHI: Minister for Labour P.K. Gurudasan has said that the Government intends to set up a welfare fund to provide pension to washermen, barbers and beauticians. Mr. Gurudasan was addressing a convention of bamboo workers at Angamaly. Kerala was setting an example for other States in providing welfare measures to weaker sections of society, he said. He inaugurated the distribution of pension under the welfare scheme for members of the Kerala Eetta, Kattuvally, Thazha Thozhilali Kshemanidhi Board. — Staff Reporter

New dental college

MALAPPURAM: The Dental Council of India has given recognition to one more dental college in the State. Educare Institute of Dental Sciences at Chattiparamba here will admit students for its maiden batch of Bachelor of Dental Sciences (BDS) course this year. College authorities said on Saturday that 50 students would be admitted for BDS this year. — Staff Reporter

Probe sought

KOCHI: The Kerala Gazetted Officers' Union has demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the suicide of Kannur RTO. A communication from the union claimed here that this was the first time that an official resorted to suicide on account of being harassed through transfers. The union claimed that after the Left Democratic Front Government came into power officials were being transferred without any humanitarian considerations.
