THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday demanded the resignation of Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy alleging failure in running the Health Department efficiently. The department had failed to take precautionary steps against the spread of chikungunya and dengue fever in the State, party leader M.T. Ramesh said. Ms. Sreemathy could not even carry out the promises she had made after visiting Pathanamthitta such as the supply of bed sheets to Government hospitals and construction of temporary sheds to house patients. He said the BJP leaders would stage dharnas in front of all district hospitals on Tuesday demanding improvement of facilities. The Yuva Morcha would undertake measures to improve sanitation and cooperate with the cleanliness drive of the Government, he said.
Munnar
Mr. Ramesh said the Communist Party of India (CPI) Ministers were trying to undermine the eviction operations at Munnar and other places. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan's silence to criticisms being aired by the CPI against the operations raised doubts. Mr. Achuthanandan should respond to the criticisms, he said. He also demanded that a White Paper be published on the status of Government leases in the State. Reservation rights of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes were being denied in the name of minority rights. The party proposed to launch an agitation in this regard.
