Thiruvananthapuram: Close on the heels of Etihad Airways commencing flights from Sharjah to Kerala, Singapore-based budget airline Tiger Airways has secured rights to commence flight operations to three airports of the State. Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode figure among the six Indian cities to which the airline has been granted permission by the Centre to operate flights. With this, the number of airlines operating from Singapore to the airports of Kerala would go up to two. Tiger Airways said it had planned its flight routes to the six cities and talks with airport authorities had commenced. Details of the flights would be announced soon, it said. Tiger is 49 per cent owned by national carrier Singapore Airlines Ltd. and 11 per cent owned by the Singapore Government's investment arm, Temasek Holdings. It is currently the largest low-cost airline operating out of Singapore in terms of passengers carried. All aircraft offer single-class economy seating for 180 seats each. Already, Silk Air, a fully owned subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, is operating flights to Nedumbaserry and Thiruvananthapuram international airport. The flight from Thiruvananthapuram commenced on June 2, 1999. The airline has now four weekly flights from the state capital. The airline commenced flights from Nedumbaserry to Singapore on October 1, 2001. The airline has now daily flights from Kochi. All the flights depart from Thiruvananthapuram and Nedumbasery in the night to reach Singapore in the morning.
