Govt. hospital nurses to go on strike

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Staff nurses and group C and D employees of all major Delhi Government hospitals including Guru Nanak Eye Centre, Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Hospital and Maulana Azad Medical and Dental College will go on a 24-hour token strike beginning Tuesday morning.

The employees are protesting against "indifferent attitude" of the Delhi Government that they said had not paid any attention to their demands despite several appeals.

Work was also affected last Thursday when nurses and group C and D staff went on a five-hour strike from 7 in the morning. The strike caught patients off-guard. However, emergency and casualty services in these hospitals were not affected.

"We are demanding that privatisation and hiring of staff on contract be stopped, the 2,500-odd vacant posts across various Delhi Government hospitals be filled up immediately, irregularities in the basic pay scale be removed and hospital employees be given free health cover. Our longstanding demands have not been looked into. If our demands are not addressed, we will have no other option but to intensify our strike. We also have received support from the Delhi State Employees Joint Action Committee. Nurses and group C and D employees of 17 smaller Delhi Government hospitals and 180 dispensaries will wear black bands on Tuesday and hold a protest demonstration during lunch hour,'' said Gyaneshwar Tiwari of Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti.
