NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government has embarked on a project to construct 40,000 low-cost flats for slum dwellers and other members of economically weaker sections of society under which they would be provided a respectful address with ownership rights in four-storey complexes, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit announced at a workshop organised in the Capital on Saturday. Addressing slum dwellers from Savda Ghevra resettlement colony at the Delhi College of Engineering on Bawana Road, the Chief Minister said the flats would be constructed using monolithic technology that would be instrumental in construction of thousands of flats in a short span of six months. "The Government would start construction of the flats on a large scale in the month of July," she said. Ms. Dikshit assured the slum dwellers that her Government would also make available easy loans for the flats that would be located in well-developed areas and would have schools, dispensaries, shops and playgrounds in close proximity. Also, she said, all amenities including transport would be provided so that the poor inhabitants do not face any difficulty. The workshop was organised under the "Sanjha Prayas" (Common Endeavour) programme of the Delhi Government that was started in March 2007 and has so far covered 20 slum clusters in East Delhi and the slum resettlement colony of Savda Ghevara, where about 6,000 families were shifted from Yamuna Pusta Nangla Machi.
