Rich tributes paid to Nandini

BHUBANESWAR: On her 76th birth anniversary, former chief minister Nandini Satpathy, who was revered as the iron lady of Orissa and passed away on August 4 last year, was accorded an apt tribute with launching of the first national daughter's day - "Nandini Diwas" and project Nandini for development of semi urban and rural Indian women.

The initiatives have been undertaken by the newly set up Srimati Nandini Satpathy Memorial Trust (SMSMT).

At a special ceremony at the Rabindra Mandap in the capital, Governor Rameshwar Thakur launched the project being floated by Srimati Nandini Satpathy Memorial Trust (SMSMT). In his address, Thakur described Nandini as the worthy daughter of the soil who not only excelled in politics but in several aspects including literature. Former chief minister J.B.Patnaik was also eloquent in praising Nandini as a person and a politician.

In its year of launching, Project Nandini will focus on developing a group of adolescent girls who would be capable of exploring their genius, values and skills to full throttle and they will pass it on to the society after getting back to their own habitat, explained the Trust chairperson Suparno Satpathy.

It will further provide a podium to stand up in support of the ban on pre-natal sex determination and ban on abortion of female foeticide in India, it was announced.

Rich tributes were also paid to Nandini Satpathy on her birth anniversary at another special gathering hosted on the premises of the major Oriya newspaper "The Dharitri" that the late leader had founded along with her husband Debendra Satpathy.

Those who addressed the gathering, included former MP Srikant Jena, MPs Pyari Mohan Mohapatra and Archana Nayak, Pradesh Congress Committee chief Jayadev Jena, eminent writers Ramakant Rath and Santanu Acharya, noted singer Prafulla Kar, editor of The Samay Oriya daily Satakodi Hota, City Mayor Mihir Mohanty, cricketer and BCCI member and Ranjib Biswal and eminent actress Malabika Roy.

Nandini's son and "The Dharitri" editor Tathagat Satpathy and managing editor Adyasha Satpathy also spoke.
