JAIPUR: The prestigious technology institute, BITS Pilani, explained over the weekend why it has not been finding a place in the list of top engineering institutions in the country in India Today's survey since 2005. In 2005, the institution, located in Pilani town of Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district, opted out of the survey because of a pending court case between BITS and India Today. "In 2004, when the weekly published its rankings, BITS Pilani questioned the validity of the data on BITS reported in the magazine. It noticed the presence of many factual errors in India Today's data on BITS," said Meenakshi Raman, chief of the publications and media unit of BITS Pilani. The institute filed a court case against the magazine which is still pending. As the institute has not been participating in the survey, it does not figure in the latest India Today rankings as well. Prof. Raman said Outlook magazine in its 11th June issue carrying a survey of the country's best colleges of 2007 placed BITS Pilani No. 1 in the list of top 50 private engineering colleges. The institute secured third position among all India's top engineering institutions in terms of placements. "The maximum salary a BITSian is offered in a campus placement is Rs.23.70 lakhs per year while its overall rank is sixth among all the top engineering institutions," he said.
