Local speed post rates slashed

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh circle of Posts on Saturday announced a reduction in local speed post rates up to 50 gm from Rs. 20 (plus service tax) to Rs. 12 (inclusive of all taxes), with effect from June 11. A press release by Chief Postmaster-General, AP circle, said the rates under the `One India, one rate speed post' were being cut considering those prevailing in the express industry market and to make the service affordable. OU Sanskrit Academy director passes away

Hyderabad: The Director of Sanskrit Academy, Osmania University, Kamala passed away in Nepal while returning to India after a visit to Manasarovar on Friday. The cremation would be on Sunday in Hyderabad.

Prof. Kamala was associated with Osmania University for four decades and headed the Department of Sanskrit. University Vice-Chancellor Mohd. Suleman Siddiqi and Registrar M. Mutha Reddy expressed their grief over the demise. Staff Reporter

Edcet to be held today

VISAKHAPATNAM: All arrangements are in place for the conduct of Education Common Entrance Test 2007 to be held all over the State on Sunday, according to its Convener S.K.V.S.N. Raju here on Saturday. As many as 1,33,330 candidates were issued hall-tickets and the test would be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 325 examination centres located in 38 cities and towns, said Prof. Raju. Minister for School Education C. Damodar Rajanarasimha would draw the lots to select the set of question paper to be issued to the candidates, at a brief ceremony to be held at the TLN Sabha Hall in Andhra University campus at 6.30 a.m. on Sunday Special Correspondent

Newly-weds buried alive in roof collapse

KURNOOL: In a tragic incident, a newly wed couple was buried alive in a roof-collapse at Chiruthapalli in Kautalam mandal of Kurnool district on Friday night. According to reports, Laxmi Reddy (24) and Ayyamma (20), who were married 20 days ago, slept in a room in their neighbour's house as it was raining. The house collapsed around midnight causing their death. Special Correspondent
