BJP favours consensus candidate as President

Says NDA willing to come to understanding with UPA on the issue

  • BJP to come up with alternative economic policy before 2009 general elections
  • Efforts of regional parties to cobble up third alternative termed as wishful thinking

HYDERABAD: The BJP was in favour of a consensus candidate for Presidential election as no party enjoyed a clear majority in Parliament.

The National Democratic Alliance was willing to arrive at a consensus with the ruling United Progressive Alliance on the issue if the latter came forward, former BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu told reporters here on Saturday.

    Inquiry sought

Mr. Venkaiah Naidu also defended payment and receipt of donations to meet election expenditure, but felt the need to ascertain whether the US $ 5 million aid allegedly sought by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy from global evangelist K.A. Paul was conditional.
