MANGALORE: Rashtrakavi G.S. Shivarudrappa was presented the "Tulunadu Prashasti" here on Saturday. In true local flavour, the prashasti involved crowning the poet with a "Yakshagana kirita". Mr. Shivarudrappa said it was an honour to receive recognition in the district from which the first Rashtrakavi of the State Manjeshwar Govind Pai hailed. As a melting pot of languages such as Tulu, Konkani and Kannada, Dakshina Kannada had a unique cultural tradition, he said. The enterprising people of the region had dispelled the myth about Kannadigas being laid back, he said and added that along with being the cradle of banking and hotel industry, the region had a rich literary tradition. Both Kuvempu and Govind Pai, writers who had been given the title of Rashtrakavi, had done much to enrich Kannada, he said. D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala said Mr. Shivarudrappa's poetry had a calming effect in our world of strife. Literature must aid the progress of mankind, he said. Mr. Shivarudrappa also inaugurated the Dakshina Kannada district unit of Akhila Bharatha Sharana Sahitya Parishat. Vishvesha Tirtha swamiji of Pejawar Math and Shivarathri Deshikendra swamiji of Suttur Math were present.
