Good response to health camps

Staff Reporter

Chennai: Corporation's Varummun Kappom (preventive healthcare) camps, conducted in Arumbakkam and Thousand Lights on Saturday, received an unusually large turnout.

About 4,200 persons were screened at the camps. "Normally, the camps will attract about 2,500. The Health Department staff, including sanitary inspectors, motivated the people to attend the camps. They motivated them to go for health check-up," said Corporation Health Officer P. Kuganantham.

Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy inaugurated the camp held at a Corporation school in the MMDA Colony in Arumbakkam. A team of doctors did blood and urine tests, ultrasound scanning and ECG checks. About 75 cases each of diabetes and cataract were detected. Seven women were found to have cervical cancer lesions. Treatment will be offered to them. Mayor M. Subramanian, who visited both camps, said about 37,500 people had been screened in the 17 camps held so far.
