Kochi: A seminar on the draft forest policy of the Government was organised on Saturday by the Indian Federation of Women Lawyers (Kerala). The seminar was inaugurated by Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish. Introducing the policy, the former judge of the Mumbai High Court K.Sukumaran said that the Government and Forest Minister Benoy Viswom deserved appreciation for announcing a forest policy. The participation of women, panchayats and people in the implementation of the forest policy would help the greens. He said that some genuine organisations had been cooperating with the Forest Department in propagating the planting of saplings. He suggested that a survey of existing avenue tress and the missing ones could be undertaken.
Enforce law
A strict enforcement of the provisions of the Arms Act was indispensable in forest areas. The presence of a person in wildlife sanctuaries should be made a cognisable offence. The burden of proof for establishing his innocence should be cast on the person apprehended. Chief Conservator of Forest (Development) Trivedi Babu, M.K. Prasad of Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, V.S. Vijayan, Chairman Kerala Biodiversity Board, and others spoke.
