Plant more saplings, self-help groups told

Vinobhanagar, Vilankombai tribal settlements selected for development

ERODE: "Members of women self-help groups (SHGs) should take responsibility of planting as many saplings as possible in plains and also in forest areas. If more number of saplings are planted in the forest areas, both the Government and the tribal people will get encouraging revenue. We can also save the forests from destruction," said Conservator of Forests P. Durairasu at Vinobhanagar tribal settlement in Thooka Naickken Palayam forest range here recently.

Celebrating the World Environment Day on behalf of the forest department, Mr. Durairasu said under the Tamil Nadu Forest Development Programme, Vinobhanagar and Vilankombai tribal settlements had been selected for development this year.

He wanted the villagers to cooperate with the department in making the forests greener.

He appealed to the public not to involve in deforestation activities.

On the occasion, scientist Namazvar urged the people to use organic manure in forest areas.

Chemical fertilizers

The scientist wanted the forest officials and the public not to patronise chemical fertilizers as they would slowly destroy the forests in the long run.

Further, the plants and trees would become poisonous if the chemical fertilizers were used and subsequently, the animals that were eating the plants would also be affected.

Use of organic manure should be popularised to save the people and the world, he added.

District Forest Officer R. Ramasubramaniam, secretary of the Service Unit for Development Activities in Rural S.C. Natraj and Forest Committee president Manickkam spoke.

Similarly, on behalf of the NSS Unit of the Bangalapudur Government Higher Secondary School, the World Environment Day was observed on the school premises.

Headmaster P.N. Duraisamy and NSS programme officer T.D. Devaraj participated in the function.

Competition

An essay writing competition on environment awareness was conducted for school students.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions conducted in connection with the day.
