Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Ananya's festival of young musicians this season threw up a promising talent in Hindustani vocalist to the fore. Mahalakshmi Shenoy Karkala from Dakshina Kannada reassured listeners at Sevasadana in Malleswaram on Saturday that Hindustani music was in safe hands. A disciple of Ramarao Nayak of Goa, she proved her good grounding .

Beginning her concert with Puriya Dhanashree in vilambit (slow-paced rendition) with the composition "Lagi mori laaj... ", she expanded in the drut (fast rendition) with the cheez "Paayaliya Jhanakara... "

Mahalakshmi began her training under B. Yogish Balika of Karkala though it was Vyasakrishna Upadhyaya of Karkala who first moulded her talent at the age of five. Subsequently, she has trained under Vishwamohan Bhatt.

She bagged the national award at the All India University Association's National Youth Cultural Festival in Chennai in January.

She has released three albums.
