Nagercoil: As part of a disaster risk management programme, streetplays, `oyilattam' and `kollattam,' were conducted recently at Vaniyakudi near Colachel. The State Government, in association with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is implementing disaster risk management programme in the district. The goal of the project is to reduce vulnerability to disaster through community participation. UNDP and the district administration recently initiated plays to educate grass-roots level communities. Such programmes are being implemented through non-governmental organisations. Life Care Trust, a non-governmental organisation based at Kodimunai near Colachel, organised a play at Vaniyakudi. As many as 22 trained women organisers performed `oyilattam' and `kollattam.' They highlighted the value of using boiled and chlorinated water, avoiding open defecation, removing stagnant water etc. The State co-ordinator of the disaster management programme (UNDP), Kavitha, said that the programme was started in the district in 2004.
