NANNING (CHINA): Eight persons were killed and 1.68 million persons have been affected in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region due to floods triggered by continuous heavy rain which started on Wednesday. An official report said 3,751 houses and 89,800 hectares of crops were destroyed in 31 counties. The floods forced suspension of operations in 87 factories and coalmines and damaged 36 reservoirs and 477 dams. The report said the floods had resulted in a huge economic loss. Till Sunday, seven towns in Guangxi received more than 250 mm rainfall and 31 towns reported 100 mm to 250 mm. The rainstorms have subsided. But the water levels in major rivers will keep rising during the next few days. An emergency rescue group from China's Ministry of Civil Affairs has been sent to the stricken area. At least 29 persons have been reported dead as violent rainstorms plague southern Guangdong and southwestern Guizhou and Sichuan provinces. — Xinhua
