Staff Reporter

For corporate social responsibility

MALAPPURAM: Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier's Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal, has won this year's corporate social responsibility award instituted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi.

Arya Vaidya Sala has become the first organisation in the State to win this award. A jury headed by J.S. Varma, former Chief Justice of Supreme Court and former chairman of the Human Rights Commission, chose Arya Vaidya Sala for the award especially for running a charitable hospital.

The jury collected first-hand information from the sites of the organisations short-listed for the award. Arya Vaidya Sala's Charitable Hospital was rated as a significant community activity undertaken by a corporate body.

Founded in 1924 by P.S. Varier, the Charitable Hospital gives free medical treatment to poor patients. Arya Vaidya Sala spends 45 per cent of its profit for treatment of poor patients at its Charitable Hospital.

More than 2,100 inpatients and 3.6 lakh outpatients obtained free medical treatment at the Charitable Hospital last year, costing Arya Vaidya Sala Rs.6 crore.

Arya Vaidya Sala general manager A.R. Sankaranarayanan received the award from Union Minister for Finance P. Chidambaram at a function held in New Delhi recently.
