Nagercoil/Coimbatore: Following directions from the Government, officials in border districts of the State began taking precautions against chikungunya spreading to Tamil Nadu from Kerala.

Joint Director for Public Health S. Elangovan said the Health department established check posts in Kanyakumari, Theni and Coimbatore districts.

Speaking to The Hindu , he said cleanliness drive had started. People travelling to Tamil Nadu from Kerala were asked to undergo screening at the health centres. The department has set up six check posts at the entry points in Kanyakumari district. Passengers wanting to cross over should undergo medical check-up at the centres.

The centres as well as taluk and district hospitals and the Kanyakumari Medical College at Asaripallam have adequate stock of medicines and enough doctors and paramedical staff to give immediate treatment to the affected persons.

Fogging operation to tackle mosquito-borne viral disease in the border areas (Kerala), particularly in Kanyakumari, Theni and Coimbatore district had started.

Steps had been taken to clean inter-State buses before they entered the State, said Mr. Elangovan.

He appealed to the people not to panic,as the State Government had taken necessary steps to prevent the spread of the disease.

Later, he held discussion with the officials of the department of health.

In Coimbatore, the department is establishing screening and counselling booths at 10 check posts along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. Health officials said on Sunday that no case of chikungunya was reported in the district.

All hospitals were being monitored for early detection and treatment.

The district health department and the health wing of the Coimbatore Corporation had begun a door-to-door sensitisation drive.
