`Appointments to boards soon'

BANGALORE: Janata Dal (Secular) president H. D. Deve Gowda on Sunday said the party would take a decision on appointments to the district-level boards and corporations in about a week.

He told presspersons here that party's State unit chief M.P. Prakash had already held a round of consultations in this regard with Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy.

The process of appointments to the State-level boards and corporations would commence after completing the above task.

HR executive drowns

MANGALORE: A human resource executive working for Accenture in Bangalore drowned in Gurupur off Bengre breakwater estuary in Panambur police station limits on Sunday.

The police identified the victim as Smitha K. Bongale (23) of Maharashtra, who had settled down in Bangalore. Smitha and her friends from the company had come to the city on Friday.

Early on Sunday, the friends went out for a swim in the river when Smitha was swept away.

World Environment Day celebrated

Bidar: The Forest Department and Parisara Vahini organised World Environment Day celebrations at Rajeshwar in Basava Kalyan taluk on Saturday. Schoolchildren planted 500 saplings at Karnataka School, Kittur Rani Chennamma School, Devanga Math and Rajeshwar Hire Math. Parisara Vahini president Shailendra Kavadi, Ghanalinga Rudramuni Shivacharya Swamiji, and Deputy Superintendent of Police P.A. Korwar spoke. Deputy Conservator of Forests D.K. Woman succumbs to burns

Raichur: Shantamma (31), wife of Palraj, who sustained burns when a lamp fell on her while she was cooking in her house at Jawalgera village in Sindhanur taluk on June 3, died at Government Hospital in Sindhanur on Saturday. The Balaganur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Last date

MYSORE: The Karnataka State Open University has fixed June 14 as the last date for remitting examination fees without fine and June 19 with fine for the 2006-07 MBA (semester scheme) examination.

Eight arrested

Raichur: The police arrested Hanumantha, Basha, Dastagirisab, Narasappa, Hussainsab, Ramu and Hanumaiah from Shakthinagar near here and Srinivas from Mnavi town on Saturday on the charge of gambling and recovered Rs. 3,500 from them. They have been remanded in judicial custody. — Staff Correspondent

Spurious toddy seized

Raichur: The police arrested Laxmi and Narasamma and seized 20 litres of spurious toddy and 400 gm of chloral hydrate powder from them when they were selling it at Jaheerabad and J.D. Tota in Raichur city on Saturday. — Staff Correspondent

Job fair

Belgaum: As part of its nationwide drive, the TMI First, which claims to be India's largest fresher recruitment and employability firm and which is conducting multiple job fairs across the country, will be conducting a career and job fair at R.P.D. Strike ends

Sirsi: Students of Sirsi Forestry College ended their strike, which had gone on for 19 days, on Saturday after senior officials of the Forest Department agreed that their demands would be met.

The students were agitating against the alleged injustice to graduates from the college in appointments to the post of Range Forest Officer (RFO) through the direct selection process.

Teakwood seized

Sirsi: Teakwood worth Rs. 15,000 was seized in an operation conducted by Range Forest Officer S.B. Marigappanavar and his team at Hebre teak plantation near Sirsi on Thursday.

The alleged timber smugglers are absconding and an investigation is on. — Correspondent
