Dasgupta calls for a new political order

KADAPA: A new political order and a strong socialist movement are the need of the hour in the country, CPI floor leader in Parliament and AITUC national secretary Gurudas Dasgupta said on Sunday.

Wealth in the nation is in the hands of the rich, landlords, contractors and capitalists and the working class lacks shelter, clothing and food, he lamented at a public meeting on the inaugural day of three-day AITUC State conference here. Ironically, Government's policies are in favour of the former, he remarked.

Poverty and unemployment are plaguing the nation and poorer sections, constituting 70 per cent of population, lack access to minimum wages and proper medicare, Mr. Dasgupta said. Ninety seven per cent of unorganised workers suffer from anti-labour policies and languish with no courage to question the policy-makers, he said. AITUC was waging struggles to espouse their cause, he said.

The Maharashtra Government hiked wages of anganwadi workers by Rs. 400 and that of anganwadi helpers by Rs. 250 owing to agitations by AITUC, he said. Workers' agitations should send shivers down the capitalists' spines, he said.

He lamented steep price rise, shattered public distribution system, non-implementation of labour laws and lack of distribution of surplus lands.

CPI State Secretary K. Narayana demanded revival of railway locoshed at Nandalur and other closed industries in Kadapa district.

Accusing some parties with being `opportunistic' on Pothireddipadu head regulator issue, he said they did not mind Godavari water flowing into the sea but opposed their use by backward areas and raking up regional conflicts. He warned that the party would launch an agitation if Galeru Nagari project is not built as per previous designs.
