Chitradurga: The Government has released Rs. 5.25 crore to develop 10 slums in the city under the Nirmal Jyoti Scheme. As many as 25,000 people are living in 24 slums here. Assistant engineer of the Karnataka Slum Clearance Board H.R. Ravishankar said that development works at 10 slums would begin soon. Last year, the Government released Rs. 3 crore for the development of 12 slums. Of the 12 slums, two were under litigation. The board could develop only 10 slums. He said that for the rehabilitation of slum dwellers, the Government had constructed 828 houses under Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojane in the city. The scheme had been extended to poor people in other parts of the district by building 428 houses. He said 62 houses were being built in the city, 60 in Chalkere, 45 in Holalkere, and 87 in Hosadurga. The Government had released Rs. 12 lakh for the development of slums in 2002-03, while in 2003-04, it released only Rs. 1 lakh.
Problem
Mr. Ravishankar said that the board was facing a problem in relocating some slum dwellers who were not willing to shift stating that the new houses were away from the city. In such cases, the board was trying to provide basic amenities such as drainage, water, roads and electricity to the slums, he said. He said that the State Government would soon come up with a new scheme, Integrated Housing Slum Development Project (IHSDP), for the district.
