Bangalore girl receives an international award for her entry

WINNING ENTRY: The picture that won Lakshmishree an award.

Bangalore: She may be all of 11, but she has already several awards under her belt.

A.J.S. Lakshmishree, who took part in an international painting competition organised by UNESCO and Goleniowski Dom Kultury, Poland, won the Director of Goleniow Culture House prize recently for her painting that was a depiction of village women weaving cane baskets.

Speaking to The Hindu , Lakshmishree, a sixth standard student of Bethesda NTM School, said she got to know about the competition while browsing the Internet. "I applied and sent my entry about four months ago. I did not expect to win such a prestigious award. I am very happy."

Lakshmishree and her father A.G.K. Jayaprakash were invited to go to Goleniow in Poland to receive the award. "There were children from across the world. We stayed in Poland for four days. It was a great honour to receive the award and a pleasure to stay in Poland," she said. About Poland, she said it was "calm and quiet, unlike Bangalore." "There were so few vehicles on the roads. It is a beautiful city. I enjoyed my stay. My father accompanied me and we had a lot of fun," she added. Mr. Jayaprakash told The Hindu that Lakshmishree has shown an interest in the arts from the age of three. "I am an architect and my work sometimes involves the use of paint. So I had paint and brushes at home. To keep her engaged, we would give her paint and paper and that would keep her busy for hours," he said.

He said she has taken up a correspondence course with the M.C. Academy.

Artists, including S. Prahlad, M.B. Patil, had helped her fine-tune her skills. "We will encourage her to take it further," he added.
