Alumni gift language lab to school

OLD STUDENTS' GIFT: The language laboratory set up at the St. Joseph's High School.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Students of the 1987 batch of the St. Joseph's High School, here, have helped set up a language laboratory worth Rs.2.5 lakh in the school.

The laboratory, consisting of one master module and 18 student modules complete with tape drives and a DVD player will be inaugurated by Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan on June 14.

The concept of having an association of students of the 1987 batch was born during a dinner meeting between two batch mates in 2005. One of them, Alex C. Augustine who now runs an IT firm, then spread the word among four or five friends. Encouraged by their response he launched a web site in February 2006 as a forum for the reunion of his 288-odd batch mates.

The group that began with 16 members soon grew to become a 100-member registered trust `The SJHS 1987 Batch Trust'. "It was at this point that we started talking about doing something for the school. When we met principal M. A. George he told us that we could either set up a computer lab or a language lab," Mr. Augustine said here.

The Trust members reasoned that a language lab would help the students of the school polish their language skills and thus gain an advantage over others in their chosen careers.

With the school management allotting a hall for the lab and with Trust members managing to collect Rs.2.5 lakh the laboratory was all set to become a reality.
