BANGALORE: "I want to help other students through scholarships and career guidance, when I start earning," says Jayant E., who secured the 38th rank in the engineering in Common Entrance Test. Echoing Jayant's pay-it-forward principle were Praveen Kumar and Archana H. who stood 333rd and 382nd in CET engineering this year. These three were among the 50 economically backward students from Bangalore, Dharwad and Raichur who had performed well in their second pre-university course and also common entrance test and were awarded scholarships by non-governmental organisations Prerana and Vidya Poshak on Sunday. "Repay what help you received for your education by helping other students when you stand on your own legs. Also, once you can manage the finances for your education through loans, opt for them. So that the scholarships that you would get can be given to other students," chairperson of Infosys foundation Sudha Murthy said. Addressing the girl students earlier, Ms. Murthy urged them to take up jobs and be financially independent. "Put 10 per cent of what you earn into helping the needy," she advised. Ms. Murthy also said that the Infosys Foundation would donate Rs. 1.5 crore to Prerana for helping students in need. She also said that she would give scholarships totalling Rs. 40 lakh for these 50 students if they continued to do well in their professional courses.
