ERODE: "The Erode municipal administration is functioning in an impartial manner and are executing the works in all the 45 wards," said the Municipal Chairman, K. Kumar Murugesh.

Some others were doing strange things to draw the attention of the public, stating that no development works were carried out in the municipality. But actually within six months, works worth Rs. 18.18 crore were sanctioned and are in progress." He said in Erode municipal area, 116 drainage construction works, 130 water supply schemes, 22 roadworks, building construction works and bridge constructions totally 435 works were undertaken. Mr. Murugesh said, "Erode municipality has enough funds and even after sanctioning amount for development works, they have Rs. 78 crore, which would be spent for the development of the town. Funds are not a hurdle for the execution of works, but some councillors were stating that fund crunch has hit works in their wards."

Funds

He said the councillors could inform him if any work was delayed in their ward and he was ready to sanction more funds for completion of works.

He said the municipality had 626 conservancy workers and had been divided into 15 divisions. For each division, 40 workers had been deployed.

A total of 46 workers would be appointed soon after getting approval from the Government through the Regional Director of Municipal Administration.

The Chairman said the municipal daily market complex would be built at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh and another commercial complex at the Old Municipal Town Elementary School complex would be built at a cost of Rs. 1.70 crore. The causeway on Jeevanandhem Road would be demolished and pucca high-level bridge across the Perumpallam Odai would be built at a cost of Rs. 75 lakh. The Municipal Central Bus Stand will get facelift at a cost of Rs. 2 crore. A reverse osmosis plant would be established in bus stand for supply of drinking water.

Stray dog menace

Regarding stray dog menace, Mr. Murugesh said already 112 stray dogs were caught and family planning operations were performed on them. Now, the Union Government had ordered the sterilisation of all stray dogs and the municipal council had sanctioned Rs. 445 for each dog. Soon a `surgery shed' would be built in Solar where the stray dogs would be taken and operation performed. After keeping the operated dogs in the shed for two days, it would be taken to the place from where they were captured for operation.
