Women's groups' plea to Kalam on Bill

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Representatives of several women's groups on Monday met President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and urged him to ensure speedy passage of the Women's Reservation Bill that seeks to reserve 33 per cent seats for women in Assemblies and Parliament.

In a memorandum submitted to Mr. Kalam, the delegation, under the banner of Women Power Connect, said it had been more than a decade since the Women's Reservation Bill was introduced, but its passage still remained a distant dream.

"The United Progressive Alliance Government in the past three years has shown no intention of presenting the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament. What is more worrying is that there is not even a draft bill. We demand that the Government table it in the coming monsoon session,'' the memorandum said.

Reservation for women in panchayati raj ushered in a positive change, as women across the country learned the significance of political representation in achieving political empowerment, it said.
