NEW DELHI: The Government proposes to expand the National Child Labour Project to all endemic districts during the 11th Plan period. The scheme is operational in 250 districts in 20 States, where 7,328 special schools are functioning for children withdrawn from work. Under the scheme, in operation since 1988, children withdrawn from work are provided with education, vocational training, nutrition, stipend and healthcare.
Special schools
They are kept in the special schools for a maximum of three years to prepare them for the regular education system. About 3.30 lakh children withdrawn from work are enrolled in the special schools and 3.92 lakh children have already been mainstreamed into the formal education system. According to Census 2001 conducted by the Registrar-General of India, the number of child labourers in the country is 1.26 crore.
