News Analysis
*In a report "Bush-Manmohan meeting `positive'" (June 9, 2007, page 1), Japan was mentioned twice in the list of the G8, the group of eight top industrialised nations (the U.S., the U.K., Japan, France, Italy, Germany, Russia and Canada). A number of readers point out that the missing country should have been Germany.
*The tenth paragraph in a report "G8 and prescriptions for emerging economies" (Op-Ed, June 9, 2007) was: "India knows that it does not use energy efficiently; it uses as much crude oil as Germany but produces less than a third of the output ... ." A reader wondered whether India was as bad as represented here. Does this mean that in India we use for every megawatt generated the same amount of fuel that Germany uses for more than three megawatts, or that for every tonne-kilometre of goods transported we use three times as much fuel as the Germans, was the query. The reference in the article was to the economic output and oil consumption in the two countries. Germany's economic output or GDP ($2,897 billion in 2006, according to the International Monetary Fund) is thrice India's ($886 billion), but their oil consumption is about the same. Germany consumes 2.58 million barrels a day (BP statistical review, 2005) and India 2.49 million barrels a day.
*A report "Music composer Dattaram dead" (June 10, 2007) stated that Dattaram continued to assist Shankar [Shankarsinh Raghuwanshi] till the mid-1970s even after Jaikishen [Jaikishen Dayabhai Panchal] passed away in 1969. Jaikishen, of the Shankar-Jaikishen duo, passed away on September 12, 1971.
*A report "Search for missing soldiers still not over" (June 11, 2007) stated that Flight Lieutenant Vijay [Vasant] Tambay's Sukhoi was shot down over Pakistan within two days of the war starting on December 3 [1971]." The detail is right. Flight Lieutenant Tambay was flying a Sukhoi-7 that was reportedly downed by anti aircraft artillery over the Shorkot air force base, on December 5, 1971. (The Sukhoi-7s flew the bulk of offensive and close air support missions during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war.)
*An AP report "Djokovic relegated to the classroom" ("Sport", June 10, 2007), on the French Open, stated that there were three Serbs in the semi-finals. The Sports Desk clarifies that four Serbs figured in the French Open semi-finals. Three of them (Djokovic, Jancovic and Ivanovic) played singles, while the fourth player (Zimonjic) took part in the doubles competition. The reference, that three Serbs were in the semi-finals, was removed for the city editions. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
