LONDON: After the fiasco over plans to send Prince Harry to Iraq, there is now reported to be a move to deploy him in Afghanistan to give some respectability to his nascent military career. According to The Sunday Times, army chiefs are planning to send him "quietly'' to join British troops in Afghanistan in an attempt to "deter him from quitting the army''. The 22-year-old Prince, a junior officer, had expressed disappointment when heavily-trailed plans to send him to Iraq were dropped last month over fears for his safety following threats from militant groups. He was reported to have said at the time that he would rather quit the army than be treated differently from his army colleagues because of his status. In a front-page report, The Sunday Times said the Prince was training at a remote British army base in Alberta, Canada, from where he could be "flown to the war against the Taliban without attracting attention''. Observers questioned whether Afghanistan was less dangerous than Iraq and pointed out that if the idea was to "pack him off'' to do a desk job that might not satisfy his desire for active military duty. "The Taliban are no less vicious than the insurgents in Iraq and if he were captured, his fate would be the same as if he were taken hostage in Iraq,'' the newspaper said. There was no comment either from the royal family or the Ministry of Defence.
