NEW DELHI: Though mercury dropped by a few degrees, Delhi and other parts of north India continued to reel under the scorching heat on Monday, with Jammu recording 46 degrees celsius, six degrees above normal and Jaipur recording 45 degrees celsius, five degrees above normal. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that it was only a passing phase and has forecast that the weather was likely to cool down to comfortable levels in the coming days. "During the past four days, the heat wave situation over the plains of north and central India got aggravated due to the absence of easterlies and the dominance of dry westerlies from Rajasthan. In the last two days, the easterlies have started flowing, bringing relief to eastern parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Models now suggest that south-easterly to southerly winds may start flowing into parts of north-west India including Delhi within the next couple of days, bringing down the temperatures in these areas also'', a spokesperson said. Delhi and some parts of north-west India, he said, could start experiencing better weather from Tuesday with isolated thunderstorms. The best part was that the momentum is expected to remain sustained at least for the next week.
