HYDERABAD: Sports Authority of India rallied to hold AOC Centre to a one-all draw in the A-1 Division hockey league championship at Begumpet Police Stadium here on Monday. Winger Satprakash gave AOC the lead in the 37th minute of second half. But full-back Mohd Azharullah Khan converted a penalty-corner in the 57th minute to equalise. Though the dying minutes saw an intense struggle for supremacy, the teams failed to break the deadlock.
APCA selections
The Andhra Pradesh Chess Association will organise State selections (boys and girls under-17 years) at Gouthami Junior College (Nalgonda) from June 17 to 18. Techpoint triumphs
Techpoint Solutions scored a six-wicket win against Karvy in the final of the third Champions Trophy cricket tournament organised by Sports Un-Limited here. The scores: Final: Karvy 119 for five (David 56) lost to Techpoint Solutions 120 for four (Shane 45 not out). Semifinals: NMDC 113 lost to Techpoint 115 for three; Microsoft 116 for eight lost to Karvy 117 for six (Sanjiv Reddy 49). Special prizes: Shane (Player of the final). Faria's team wins
Faria's team of P.J. Faria (capt), C.D. Kumar, S. Kumar, D.C. Rao, B. Subrahmanyam and P. Narayana Iyer clinched the team of four duplicate event in the 40th Nizam Club annual Open bridge championship here. In the board-a-match event for the Raja Trimbaklal memorial trophy, C.V. Rao's team (C.V. Rao, Dr. K. Srinivas, V. Ramesh Kumar, Arun Deodhar and N. Viswanath) clinched the honours. In the master pairs event for Nizam Club Trophy in North-South direction, D. Sriramamurthy and T.R. Rao emerged the champion. Other placings: Team of four duplicate event: 2. Faria's `B' (Dr. A. Narayana Rao, G.E.C. Vidyasagar, Y.V. Rao, Ajay Yadnik, A.V. Subbarao and D. Humpy's European tour
Grandmaster Koneru Humpy, World No. 2, will be leaving for a European tour to play in two International open tournaments HSG Open from June 20 to 28 at Hilversum (Netherlands) and Kaupthing Open (July 7 to 14) at Differdange (Luxembourg). Humpy said here on Monday that the HSG Open should be one of the toughest events she had ever participated as about 80 players from all over the world including GMs Mikheil Mchedlishvili (Georgia), Erik van den Doel (Leiden), Stelios Halkias (Greece), Normunds Miezis (Latvia), Yge Visser (Groningen) and Karel van der Weide (Amsterdam) would be in the fray. Incidentally, the ONGC officer will be the third-seed in the HSG Open. The former World junior champion also said that she was invited to take part in the Luxembourg by the Differdange Chess Club `Le Cavalier' and is expected to be the star attraction of simultaneous exhibition matches against 25 opponents from cultural and political life, taking place the evening before the event gets off. Some of the big names who have confirmed participation in the Luxembourg Open include Gahimov Vugar (Azerbaijan), Laznicka Viktor (Czech), Malakhatko Vadim (Belarus), Kritz Leonid (Germany), Schlosser Phillip (Germany). "Essentially, these events should help me a long way in realising the ultimate dream of becoming a Super Grandmaster," said Humpy. "I have decided to continue with my father as coach as I don't think I need any foreign coach," she said.
