New Delhi
A unique product Badly printed copies of bestsellers, glossy magazines and pale cream strings of fragrant jasmine may be usual "traffic-light merchandise" in the Capital. But providing weary motorists with a little more variety and a good reason to stop is an electronic racquet, a new product that seems to be proving quite popular. No ordinary racquet, this one promises to keep deadly dengue mosquitoes and annoying flies at bay. Wrapped in neon green, these racquets seem to be quite a rage among Delhiites these days. With plenty of cars stopping to buy this unique product, it seems some people are finding new uses for it too. "I keep it charged by my bedside at night when my husband is away. If it fries flies, it will leave an intruder stunned,'' said an excited young Delhiite, finding a new use for the racquet. -- Mandira Nayar On a mission Travelling through seven States in scorching heat, 33-year-old Thangara Mahendran reached Delhi this past Friday to complete a journey with a mission to create AIDS awareness among the younger generation. Running 50 km daily, Mahendran traversed through Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi in 55 days flat after starting his effort from Surakudi in Puducherry on April 14. "AIDS is a gigantic problem worldwide and my effort is to create awareness among the youngsters, especially the under-35 age group,'' says Mahendran. Member of a group of seven, Mahendran distributed pamphlets in local language detailing information on AIDS awareness. Mahendran, who earns his living as a Life Insurance Corporation agent, plans to meet President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam in Delhi to apprise him of the need for greater awareness about AIDS among the masses. Mahendran, who will return to his native village Surakudi by train after his proposed meeting with the President, plans to make a documentary film on AIDS awareness by year-end. -- Staff Reporter Shuttle service With Delhi University admissions in full swing, different private companies are doing their bit for the newcomers. To make the journey of admission seekers hassle-free as they travel from one college to another, Airtel has started a free air-conditioned shuttle service for students from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays at North Campus as well as South Campus. It has also put up information kiosks at different points on the campus. The company is trying to help newcomers in every way, right from providing drinking water to giving information. On the North Campus, Airtel has set up a kiosk at the Faculty of Arts building. The shuttle service is being provided from the University Metro station to various points on the campus. On the South Campus, hospitality kiosks have been put up at Sri Venkateswara College, Jesus and Mary College and Gargi College. The shuttle service connects different colleges like Motilal Nehru College, Ram Lal Anand College and Lady Shri Ram College for Women, to name only a few.
