Four women drown

GUNTUR: Four women were drowned in river Krishna at Dyda village in Gurazala mandal on Monday morning. The womenhad come to the Amaralingeswara Temple on the banks of Krishna to fulfil their religious vows on Ekadasi day.

The incident came to the light only in the evening, when the villagers noticed the bodies floating. Some of the women, from the same village identified the bodies and alerted the police. - Staff Reporter

Council of Churches' plea to evangelist

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Council of Churches has urged evangelist K. A. Paul to approach appropriate authority if he had anything legally tenable and seek a redress to his grievance. Jetti A. Oliver, chairman of the council's commission on public affairs, in a statement on Monday said `going public repeatedly with vague allegations is resulting in animosities and polarisation of people, leading to un-Christian approaches to issues harming the interests of the community'. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti activists staged a demonstration in front of Gandhi Bhavan here on Monday, demanding that the Government give priority to Madiga community people in the appointment of chairmen to different corporations. `Withdraw GO 35'

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Aided Degree College Lecturers' Association has demanded withdrawal of GO 35 (on closure of aided colleges) as it deprived education to weaker sections.

M. Yadagiri, general secretary, in a statement here on Monday wanted Government to pay salaries to aided college staff on the first of every month, expressing distress that payments were being delayed for three months. - Special Correspondent

AIR to resume MW transmission

VISAKHAPATNAM: The medium wave transmission of AIR, Visakhapatnam station, will resume from Tuesday morning, according to Programme Executive Rokkam Kameswara Rao.

The MW transmission was suspended from June 7 to undertake some maintenance works.

Girl killed as lorry overturns

Kakinada: A girl, Nesika Balamma,15, was killed when the lorry by which she was travelling went out of control and overturned while negotiating a curve near Kakavadagandi village in the Rampachodavaram police station limits on Sunday.

In another case, Badireddi Veerraju, 55, an agricultural labourer drowned in a village tank while getting into it to quench his thirst at Gurrappalem village. His body was recovered on Sunday. — Correspondent

Shortage of textbooks

VIZIANAGARAM: All government, local bodies and aided schools will reopen after summer vacations on Tuesday but the required indent for textbooks has not yet received.

According to sources in District Government Textbooks Sales Office, 12,83,043 textbooks for classes 1 to 10 were received against the requirement of 21,57,938. The bundles so far received for distribution were already despatched to mandals.— Correspondent
